Picking the right Fly Fishing rod can be your most important part of your fishing gear.  Fly fishing is an art form for many and the right rod can make a masterpiece for you.  As you read a river, having a rod that you know you can count on for that precise casting hit can bring a level of enjoyment to your day out.  Having confidence in your equipment that it will perform for you when needed is crucial.

Although once practiced, fly fishing is quite simple and like many sports today, technology has taken the Fishing Rods available to you to a whole new level.  No longer will you be using a basic bamboo rod, engineering has given you a wide variety to choose from.

Graphite is one of the most common composition of rods today, but there are a lot of different models to pick from.  You want to be able to accurately cast with your rod and you want to have control over your line after you cast.  So what do you need to consider?

Think about what type of fish you will be going after.

Going after a bass and how it goes after a baitfish will be different than what a trout will do.  The fight is also different.

What type of water are you going to fish?

The type of water that you are going to be fishing will also have a factor on the type of rod that should be considered.  Fishing a smaller stream will call for precision and short, gentle casts.  A Full Flex Rod will be the best choose for this type of fishing.  You will also have a better sense for fish that you have on the line.  Having a sensitive touch will help bring in the keeper you are looking for.

If you find yourself on larger streams and don’t what or can’t afford multiple rods, then a medium flex could be a good rod.  The medium flex rod can give you the strength to land stronger fish and work well in tougher conditions.  This is probably the most common rod in the field.  By design it’s not a stiff or fast action rod, but you will still feel the sensitivity of the line.  You will also notice that you can cast further and usually with more accuracy than a full-flex rod.

If you usually fish with windy conditions, larger rivers or ocean area, or go after bigger fish; then a stiffer rod could give you the flexibility that you will need.

Overall, having the right fishing rod, can make your day out coming back being skunked or will your limit.
