Garmin Nuvi 200 review

Garmin Nuvi 200 review

The Garmin Nuvi 200 series has started to hit the stores, and we've finally put enough miles on our Nuvi 200 to produce a comprehensive review. As its name implies, the Nuvi 200 series is designed to set a new mark for the entry level of the Nuvi series. Many have speculated that this new series will be a replacement for "The StreetPilot series C. This is what we think of the Nuvi 200, and where it fits into the bigger picture Device Car GPS. Physical

The Nuvi 200 is almost exactly the same size as the Nuvi 300 series. It has virtually the same width and height, but is only a small portion thinner than the 300 models. It also comes in virtually the same weight.

Like their brethren are a power button at the top, but the operation of this button has changed. Instead of a push style button is a slider. You slide the button to the left and release to turn the unit on or off. You can also move the cursor to the right that blocks the entrance to the device as a standby button on an iPod. I'm not really sure why a hold button on this device is necessary, unless you have in mind for the pedestrian mode. Perhaps they will use this in future models of Nuvi that include an MP3 player (The Nuvi 200 does not include an MP3 player).

The SD card slot has moved from right to left. If I could choose I would prefer it to the right and sometimes I put the GPS up against the left side of the board, but without an MP3 player is not likely that he would use the card slot SD all that much anyway, so no big deal. The right side and bottom have no buttons or connectors. The only issue is the USB / power connector has been moved from the right side of the back of the Nuvi 200. Since there is no MP3 player headphone jack.

The only physical difference is that other Garmin has come finally get rid of the "trim" the GPS antenna. As much as I did not like the design to go around and be able to turn off the GPS had some advantages. The other Nuvi devices can only calculate routes from its current location unless you make a strange turn off the GPS solution, establishing a new location and then calculate the route. Without a way to turn off the GPS Nuvi 200 in the series, including the time it is impossible to solve. I often fly for work and I like to calculate how long will it take to get from my destination airport to the hotel. This is not possible with the Nuvi 200 series.

Mount

Another interesting change in Series 200 is the suction cup mount. He commended the assembly of the 300 series as the most favorable mounting in the industry. Unfortunately Garmin changed the mount slightly in the new Nuvi series. The assembly is easy to assemble, easy to adjust thanks to the ball joint, compact and a nice simple design. What sets the assembly of other difference is that the cable is connected to the frame and then the mount feeds power to the Nuvi. That has been the 200 series and instead the power cord connects directly the device. So now when you take the GPS in the mountains also have to disconnect the power cord and have a power cable dangling inside your car. Simply is not as clean as the mount for the 300 series.

Screen

3.5? touch screen Nuvi 200 powers. This screen is brilliant! It's brighter than the screen of the 300 series and is visible from a wider viewing angle. Whites are very white and bright sunshine never made the Nuvi screen difficult to read. The display is an area where the Nuvi 200 performs better than the 300 series. This is one of the best 3.5? I've seen screens.

Under the hood of the Nuvi has a very powerful chipset that he had no trouble quickly acquire a signal inside my office, maintained a strong signal, and never gave up when near tall buildings.

Some the menu items have been rearranged a bit if used for other designs Nuvi, but not making a difference in function. The "Where?" Menu has been changed to include a separate button for points of interest instead of piling all the main menu. This is a welcome change and makes it easier access to the buttons on the intersections, cities, navigating around the map, etc. And if you need to use the Nuvi 200 for geocaching emergency is to be a set of coordinates. Surf to an address

The creation of navigation to an address that has changed very little. The buttons have a bit of a more modern design and are more rounded square buttons Nuvis others. When asked a state Nuvi still can not realize that when I type in "NY" I mean "New York". Instead it insists on me to write in "NEW _ Y" before it realizes that I want to go. Also, the rest of the process is the same that prompts you with the city then the house number, and finally the name of the street. After finding the address you click the 'go' button and you're on your way.

Navigating to a POI

As mentioned above, there is now a menu button dedicated to IP. Points are still not presented in order alphabet, but fortunately there are only primaries to elect fourteen categories. Many categories such as "Food" includes submenus. In the case of food you can select from about 20 different categories of food to meet their tastes.

The search results screen also has changed in the Nuvi 200 series. The 300 series shows five results on one screen, displays the name and distance in a straight line from your position. The Nuvi 200 series only shows four results per page, but includes the street address (but not the city) in small print below the title. Personally city name might be more useful than the street here, but the important note is that more detail is shown in the sacrifice of a result less per page. Clicking one of the results will appear in the phone number and the city of that particular point of interest, along with a Go button to route to that place or Save button to save it to your favorites.

Sailing

While navigating Time the following information is displayed in the text the top of the screen. I still like a good large arrow shows the graph next turn somewhere, but I've learned to live without it in the Nuvi devices. In bottom left is a field that displays your estimated arrival time. In the bottom right shows the distance to the next turn. Clicking on this button display text display for your next instruction, a zoom view of the intersection, a voice message to read the distance to turn and return address below and the estimated time for that intersection. People seem to be divided in their preference of wanting to see "distance to turn" or "time to turn" on the main screen, but only has the option of viewing distance. Nor is there any way to see the amount of time remaining to your destination!. A bit sad that this GPS will not tell how long (in time) needed to get unless you do the math between the estimated time of arrival and the current time.

Voice Quality

He is quite strong and I could clearly hear the instructions at highway speeds with the radio on at normal levels and the windows cracked. It is not as strong as the speaker on the Nuvi 300 series, but very well done. There is no option for text to speech Nuvi 200 series, but the voice was very timely and good quality.

Advanced Features

Like the rest of the Nuvi series, the point of this device is simplicity. As a result there routing features that you might you want that are not included in the Nuvi 200 series. As mentioned above you can not set the starting location in the calculation of routes that you can not plan future unless already in its initial location. It is a simple function but unlike bypass the diversion function in most other devices not can specify to what extent the forehead wan tot bypass the current route.

Similarly there is no possibility to specify a group of multiple destinations or points intermediate and build them into a route. You can specify a waypoint per route, but no more than one.

Shopping Advice

The Nuvi 200 series is a very simple device. It has an absolutely incredible display, voice prompts are easy to interpret, and the map is very easy to follow. If your needs Navigation is simple and you wish to obtain a device that reminds you of turns and takes you to new destinations, the Nuvi 200 would be a great option.

Yes has some limitations however. No advanced planning function, no multiple destination routing, and a detour function is too simple to be used. But hey, you get a calculator, currency converter, picture viewer, unit converter and world clock. (Mild sarcasm.) Would be worth comparing the Nuvi 200 with the slightly older Nuvi 350.

Both have the same screen size, similar physical size, similar weight, almost the same interface, similar battery life, and most of the same navigation features. However, the Nuvi 350 offers maps of all of North America (200 only U.S. has 48, Hawaii and Puerto Rico), the ability to connect to a traffic receiver, MP3 player, text to speech, and the small case included. You get all Additional features and based on current prices you actually pay less for the Nuvi 200 Nuvi 350. I hope that within a few months, prices will fall Nuvi 200 below 350, but for now why pay $ 40 more for a device that has fewer features?

If the ability to have characteristics more advanced routing is important to compare the Garmin nuvi 200 vs TomTom ONE. The Garmin Nuvi 200 GPS is not bad by any means, is a performer very solid, but the price is what will make or break this GPS for many people.
