Is it possible to fly fish with just the right arm?

My husband had a stroke and lost the use of his left arm and hand. He haven’t been able to figure out how to fly fish using just his right arm. Anyone have any ideas?

I hope I’m not too late for you to see this answer.

I believe one good option for someone with the use of only one hand would be the Tenkara method of Fly Fishing. A Tenkara outfit has no reel. The line and leader are connected directly to the rod tip. The angler casts and mends with only one hand. There is no reeling or stripping. And I don’t mean a Tenkara outfit CAN be fished with one hand, it is MEANT to be fished with one hand. Please watch the video below and notice that the anglers are using only one hand to do almost all the fishing.

There are some limitations to Tenkara fishing — it’s best with dry flies and casting distance is limited. However, I am told that you can get better accuracy and delicacy with Tenkara than other gear. If your husband is fishing on small streams, Tenkara gear is as good or better than traditional gear.

Obviously, even Tenkara would be easier with two hands, but that is true of anything — making a sandwich, sending e-mail. With Tenkara gear, the angler must still tie knots, land the fish, and so forth. However, I believe with some practice and cleverness, your husband could find work-arounds and ways to get by with just the one hand. Your husband will eventually be able to make sandwiches and send e-mail. So, if he really wants it, he can make Tenkara work, too. People with disabilities of this nature can be extremely resourceful — I knew a kid who had only one arm who played baseball quite well. He was an outfielder. He caught the ball in his mitt, tossed the ball a couple feet in the air, shucked the mitt with the aid of his armpit, caught the ball in his now-bare hand, then threw it infield. It was pretty remarkable. I wouldn’t be surprised to find your husband tying one-handed clinch knots within a few months.
