WINTER FLY FISHING TIPS?

I am going to go fly fishing in Pennsylvania for the first time in the winter. I am looking for fishing suggestions and tips on strategies and what flies I should consider using.

If you’re like me and a lot of other fly anglers, the “preferred” way to catch fish is on a dry fly. If you’re lucky, there will be a midge hatch where you are and you can match that hatch with Griffith’s Gnats and other midge patterns in sizes #16 down to #22. Midge hatches can be very productive in winter fishing if you can find it.

If there’s no dry action, then fish nymphs. Scuds, shrimp, and crawfish can work in the winter, but you’ll probably have better luck with chironomids, Prince Nymphs, Pheasant Tails, Hare’s Ear Nymphs, and the like. Leech patterns can really slay big trout in ponds and lakes. Always try Woolly Buggers — never know when they might be hot. Try a couple contrasting nymphs in tandem to increase the odds — a big light-colored Hare’s Ear Nymph with a small dark-colored or flashy nymph as a dropper. Or try a big Woolly Bugger in the lead and a small sparkly nymph below.

Also, depending on the waterbody, you may see action on egg patterns. Browns spawn in November and into winter, whitefish spawn in the middle of winter, and cutts and rainbows spawn later. Fresh trout eggs are dark pink or red and turn pale over the weeks following the spawn. Whitefish eggs are orange or dark yellow and also turn pale over time. If you catch a spawn in progress the fishing can be phenomenal. Fish them so that they roll along the bottom of the stream with a strike indicator above.
