Looking for new Musky Trolling Rods?
I have been usin 6’6 berkley heavy musky rods for trolling with Penn 209 reels looking for sum new rods thinkin bout okuma 7’4 heavy,,,2-10 oz lures – i see guys usin and tellin me to go longer but ave always used a shorter rod,,, any educated advice on this subject…
I don’t usually make figure 8′s or ovals TROLLING…
I’ve never fished muskies (I’m a saltwater guy) but I’ve caught a lot of strong fish. When trolling, the rod length doesn’t matter, but when fighting a strong fish, a shorter rod gives you better leverage. The only advantage of a longer rod might be if you need the length to keep the line clear of obstructions (like if the fish is diving under the boat), or if you’re fighting a fish with a soft mouth (like salmon) and you don’t want to tear the hook out, and the longer rod has more give to it. The first might apply to you, the second probably doesn’t.
